Carne Mountain east of Glacier Peak in Washington's Central Cascades has some of the most colorful larch displays in the state. We happened to hike there after the first foot of snow had already fallen. I have always felt as if these days are like walking into a color negative -- the evergreens are brighter than the sky, and the ground is lighter than the sky. The light from behind the trees is beckoning and hopeful. I also painted the same scene in watercolor alone, as well as 6 versions of Buck Mountain, which you see if you turn around from this same spot.
